Before watches were wound by twisting the stem, a key (like this one) was fitted to a gear at the back of the watch to wind the piece. Since it was necessary to carry the key with the watch, these keys often took fanciful forms and were used as decorative fobs on the watch chains alongside the watches. Now, we wear the lovely old watch keys as pendants.
This enchanting little watch key dates to the turn of the 19th Century. The gold-sheeted key is set with discs of bloodstone on one side and moss agate on the other. Gold is too soft for use in a winding tool; the winders were made of steel and then covered in a sheet of gold. The drum-style surround is engraved with a floral border and capped with a swiveling bale. A perfect pendant for our Ancient Influences married chains. Circa 1800.
Details.....The watch key measures 1.02" long and .30" by .15" wide. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it a part of their charm.
